Flora Aeterna refers to our connection with the natural landscape that surrounds us. Fertile soil such as sand, limestone, loam and clay on which nature can grow and flourish. Nature that takes a different breathtaking shape every season, evoking scents, colours and tangible memories, like plumes of grass sliding through your fingers or blowing the seeds of a dandelion into the sky. I tried to capture the earth and our environment in a tableware collection. By kneading and shaping clay and literally leaving an imprint, flowers are perpetuated in a poetic way.

Flora Aeterna is a 12-piece tableware collection where craftsmanship, technology and sustainability come together in a unique design. Flora Aeterna is one of a kind. Made from locally sourced waste shards, the tableware emphasizes Lotte Douwes’ sustainable mission and sets an innovative and inspiring example for the industry. The designer is founder of Studio Lotte Douwes and Meaningful Matter, both design studio and sustainable production facility for high quality waste-based porcelain. Her mission is to make the entire ceramic production process circular and inclusive. Together with social partners, precious raw materials are sorted and rescued from landfills, resulting in unique clay recipes that save energy consumption in transport as well as production. The designs are made to cherish and last a lifetime.

Flora Aeterna is a 12-part dinnerware collection made with locally sourced waste shards. The collection emphasizes our sustainable mission which we happily share with the local people we work with. We safe thousands of kilos ceramic waste from going to landfill and give it a valuable destination in our productions.

Special thanks goes out to the people helping us in realizing this ambitious project, which are: Stichting De Voedseltuin Rotterdam, Stichting Kringloop Zwolle, the engineers from our beloved Keilewerf, CityLab010, Rabo Foundation, my great team Meaningful Matter and dearest friends, supporters and James.
