In my mission to create sustainable ceramics through circular production processes, I had the chance to research a circular chain in the Netherlands together with projectpartners Stichting Kringloop Zwolle, Aberson and Royal Goedewaagen. We dove deep into new ways to reuse discarded ceramics, production methods, logistics and business models. I looked at the material possibilities related to production methods. The material, mostly high fired and glazed shards coming from thrift stores of Stichting Kringloop Zwolle. For half a year, I made clay recipes based on a wide variety of shards materials, such as red and white earthenware, stonewares, white and decorated porcelain, as well as factory waste streams.

The recipes contain 3-100% waste material. Each material – earthenware, stoneware and porcelain – and production technique has its own recipe formulated, as well as percentage of waste. All dived into recipes where waste is visually appearing or not. We made an important step towards circular ceramics, which wes now produce with a mix of ceramic waste from Stichting Kringloop Zwolle.
