Shadows of Light started as a research project to create sustainable (white translucent) porcelain, through recycling.
It started with developing translucent porcelain made from recycled waste material, a research I accomplished in Jingdezhen, China. It’s here where I discovered many interesting qualities of the waste lying around in the city and used them as a design tool for new materials.
Back home in my studio I created a ‘No Waste’ tableware collection. The waste which is part of the production anyway, is being used for the same production using it’s special characteristics. The waste of the full colored cups is grinded into fine powder and added to regular porcelain clay. This leaves interesting patterns and colors behind in the final results. The collection contains a full colored cup and a speckled cup. The left over drips left behind at the table after production are collected and rolled out into a clay slab where I make jewelry and coasters from. Every little left over piece or waste is brought back into the same production. This circular and sustainable produced tableware collection demonstrates opportunities for businesses who embrace circular entrepreneurship.
The aim of my project is to create impact and work towards sustainable production methods. It’s possible to collaborate with restaurants and design custom made shapes and colors tableware collections based on this production technique. For more information, please get in touch with us.
